Tree Planting Exercise, National Trout Hatchery Kiganjo

The Fish Levy Trust Fund in conjunction with The State Department for Fisheries, Aquaculture & The Blue Economy, and The Kenya Fisheries Service took part in a tree planting exercise at National Trout Hatchery, Kiganjo in fulfillment of the presidential directive to increase forest cover by 10%.
Forests provide important ecosystem functions that support the productive capacity and sustainability of inland fisheries. They are also beneficial in strengthening the biological integrity of aquatic ecosystems by improving the productivity of inland fisheries and increasing the availability of fish.
The team planted indigenous trees, which included Croton megalocapus, Red cider, Podo Tree and Orea africanus among others. To launch the occasion, The Ag. CEO, Dr. Beatrice Akunga, The Under Secretary SDFA & BE Mr. Eugene Lukingi and The Deputy Director of Fisheries, Mr. Justus Njue planted cider trees around the Hatchery. The team then proceeded to plant and water the trees around the property.
